UN High-Level Meeting on Prevention and Control of NCDs
The United Nations General Assembly will host a high-level meeting (HLM) on prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) on September 27, 2018.
The HLM on NCDs will begin with an opening session, followed by a plenary session, two multi-stakeholder panels, and a closing session. The opening session will take place from 10 to 11 AM. and will feature statements by the President of the General Assembly at its seventy-third session, the Secretary-General, the Director General of the World Health Organization, a member of the World Health Organization Independent HLM on NCDs, and a champion of the fight against NCDs; the plenary session will take place from 11 AM to 1 PM and 3 to 5:30 PM and will be comprised of statements by Member States and observers of the General Assembly; two consecutive multi-stakeholder panels will take place, one from 11 AM to 1 PM, and the other from 3 to 5 PM; the closing session by the President of the General Assembly will comprise summaries of the multi-stakeholder panels and concluding remarks. UN Interactive Hearing on NCDs
The President of the UN General Assembly, with the support of WHO, organized and presided over an interactive hearing which took place on July 5, 2017 in New York as part of the preparatory process for the third HLM on NCDs. An interactive hearing took place with the active participation of representatives of Member States, observers of the General Assembly, parliamentarians, representatives of local government, relevant United Nations entities, non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council, civil society organizations, philanthropic foundations, academia, medical associations, the private sector and broader communities, ensuring the participation and voices of women, children and indigenous leadership.
